cher1e, I'm glad you've decided to do a little more research into the company and into finding your own accom. in London. Allow me to add to the already good points made by everyone else
- Gumtree is a great site for accommodation, jobs, and other issues for those living in London (not just Australians and NZs), however don't believe the one post about Passport2Pubs, you don't exactly know who posted it and if it's genuine.
- I'd do what you're aiming and find a room in a sharehouse for the first few weeks while you find your feet and bearings then decide if you want to/can afford to live in different accommodation. This way you'll be able to ask questions of your housemates and hear of jobs in different industries, not just pubs, as well as understand the differences between life in Australia and life in the UK.
-there are plenty of dodgy agencies, from Hospitality to Nursing specialists, who claim to have the solution for you as long as you're willing to pay big bucks for the privlege of their "expertise". Follow your instinct and be wary - you don't need to pay to get a job. Plenty of pubs have jobs going all the time and often have accommodation attached to them as well. Other places other than Gumtree to look are in the weekly magazine TNT (at train and Tube stations on Tuesdays), large Australian/NZ/SA pubs like Walkabout, Springbok or Redback (but it would be good for you to spend time away from the massess to give you the experience of London, and not just home-away-from-home) or just walk into a pub in an area you like the look of and ask if they have any vacancies. This is the most common way travellers get jobs and you're not locked into any contracts or agencies.
And Muvver - totally agree with the smoking ban. Can't understand the massive resistance by the government - Italy did just fine with the ban over a year ago, and they didn't turn into a "giant ashtray" as their health minister said they would (ironic isn't it?!!!)
Good luck cher1e and enjoy London - it will eat you alive at first, but it's a unique & seductive city too! ;D
