Well, I could always try next time and see what happens . When you use your debit card at stores in Europe, is it swiped through a machine by the clerk, and then you enter your PIN number and okay the amount following the prompts on a device with a tiny screen?

Interesting thought...sometimes yes and sometimes not. But I find the same true here in Florida...some places/machines want a PIN and option cash back, others just 'go through' like a regular credit card....nevertheless however they process they both come straight out of my checking account. Thinking back, overseas they normally processed like a CC even though it was debiting straight from my checking...I was not asked for PIN nor offered cash back.
However it processed it though, it worked just fine with never a problem. ;D

Yikes, that's a bit unsecure then, if they just swipe it and don't need a PIN.. If you lose your card, you could be in serious trouble!
Or maybe it was like that cause you had a combo Visa/ATM card? Like WillTravel says, it's different here in Canada - we don't have combo ones.

!!!!!! And I don't have a combo one! My ATM/debit card is from my bank.....my Visa card is Citibank....no way connected! It was my Compass bank card that I use overseas...which sometimes processes, even her in FL as a CC. This is just the oddest thing to me...sorry.

Guys,
Now that we've got it straight about you being able to withdraw money everything - does anyone have objections about me removing these posts?
I meant to lock this topic and just have it as a FAQ sort of thing for reference but forgot.

okay by me.....still puzzled by this entire discussion....a 'card' is a card and personally have never had a problem....maybe I was lucky? Don't think so but willing to accept others may have,
otoh...instead of deleting the entire mess maybe you should just cut and paste it to a new subject? Else we may well be having this disucssion next week!
