dougj, I really need to get a new debit card. I know this sounds strange, but what logo's do you have on the back of your card? I've been told that mine is missing an important one. I have PLUS. I really have no idea what could be wrong with it, but a person who visited the US with a card like mine had real trouble getting money out of the bank.
I bought some travellers cheques today (the rate is 2.27CDN on the pound!! that's amazing) and I'll probably pick up some cash tomorrow or early next week.

going to 3 different banks to get some start off pounds and euro. Wow. I thought I was unlucky when I had to wait 24hrs to get some Slovakian Koruny (I could have got them somewhere else without a wait, but I wanted to get them from my bank as they charge 0% commission and still give a decent rate). As for debit cards, look for Cirrus/Maestro. The cirrus logo is 2 horizontally interlinked circles in 2 shades of blue, whilst the maestro one is similar but blue and red.

Yeah- their owned by mastercard. Essentially they're the debit card arm of mastercard.

scotia isn't linked to the cirrus network, thats probably the one. every atm I used in europe supported the plus network though, so you shouldn't have any problem. but bring some backup traveller's cheques anyway. dougj, I really need to get a new debit card. During a trip to Austria in 2001, a member of my travel party attempted to conduct an exchange using traveller's checks at a Bank Austria branch. The teller actually talked this person out of the transaction, pointing out that the bank fee alone would cost $40 USD to change $500 in American Express checks. That fee is IN ADDITION to the 5% lower (poorer for us) exchange rate. So the total would amount to a 13% LOSS!
