would you consider moving the trip up or back to make it a Spring trip? it might be better to go to cheaper places first, learn how to travel w/o spending lots of cash, before going to expensive Northern Europe. just an idea. - d It seems I have a lot to think about in terms of itinerary. So far, all we now is that we want to leave for England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales in August 2007. <snip> From there we want to go through Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Greece, Belgum, Holland, and some others money depending - but not in this order.

David,
I am still new to this and thus I am not sure I follow the reasoning for making it a Spring trip. Both Spring and Fall are the off-seasons in Europe right? So, if we did the more expensive countries in Fall wouldn't this save us same amount of money as if we travelled in Spring?

Ken, I join Jules80 in saying I am just a bit puzzled about the 'Italy is expensive' talk. Yes, you can 'make' it so depending on your choices but overall I have always found it to be fairly moderate in cost. As to weather, have been there 3 times in Dec/Jan time frame and have had excellent weather. Maybe just my good luck.....But in almost 3 months total time travel there I haven't had more than a week's worth of rainy days total. Venice can be quite chilly and windy that time of year, as can Florence sometimes. Rome has ever been a glory, chilly mornings with temps in the mid-60's by afternoon. Of course every year can be different but just to say in 3 of the past 4 years it has been quite good weather wise. UK is pretty wicked budget wise and winter weather is not especially great. Prices are better in winter of course, but still high. I was personally underwhelmed by Ireland and found it a budget buster indeed. But to be fair, I was there in Dec again and the weather hardly showed it to it's glorious green advantage. I'd say you have a good plan to hit UK first...while the weather should still be fairly good, should season rates apply (NOT that it makes that much difference there) And can't say you would likely find much difference between fall and spring. I think I would suggest a clockwise route for your trip based on when you are planning to leave. That would put you in the med. region and into Italy in late fall/early winter with great pricing and still quite nice weather. Not sure about Czech winters but can tell you that Poland is cold, snowy, and dark in January! Ray could give you some tips on Czech in winter. You might do well to post a new thread in pre-travel planning on your route. Some folks may not check this forum since it is 'currency' and you might get better response in another one. Keep asking away.....it's what we're all here for and each of us has his/her own opinion. But that helps you get some perspective and make a wise choice. ging

the suggestion was to reverse the order of you travels, cheaper South, where you could hone your cheap travel skills, first - then go to more expensive North after you learn how to travel w/o spending loads of cash. this change of itinerary would make Spring better, so it would be warmer up North in the latter part of your trip. i hope this explanation makes more sense. sometimes words fail me. - d I am still new to this and thus I am not sure I follow the reasoning for making it a Spring trip.
