take it out of a cash machine when you're there. you'll get the best rates that way. you may want to take out some before you leave just so you have some on hand. but you'll get a way better exchange rate out of a machine and not from bureau de change.

you'd prolly get the best rate simply by taking Euro out of an ATM after you've landed in Eurozone. there are ATM's in airports, even. as for ATM fees, there are banks out there, in America at least, with no fee. the one i use doesn't charge a fee, and even pays the fee other US banks charge to use their ATM as a non customer <up to 4 a month, up to US$2.50 per time>. i use bankdirect.com if you're interested. - d should i buy my euro here in the USA or would it be better over in europe?

travellers cheques are not usually a good way to go, cause there are exchange rates that are crappy plus they usually charge a fee to cash them. its also harder and harder to find places that will even cash them. your best bet is a mix of atm and credit cards which get excellent rates as well. Jules hey, just in case anyone is still reading this thread... You get the best exchange rates from ATM’s and they are safer than carrying cash. It’s a good idea to scope out the ATM’s around your hotel before you travel. Here’s the site I’ve been using for my next trip: ATM locator - www.fanwithaplan.com/#atm

Hey just as an afterthought, Commerce Bank in Pennsylvania (and I think NJ), USA also has no fees for using any ATM worldwide. And will also reimburse you for the other banks fees if you have $2500 in your checking account. www.commerceonline.com/
