Herrbert - good way of putting it . And yeah, the US is getting pretty cheap now. As for the farming thing, does anyone here know what/any visa implications this would have? You definitely need to look into that. Otherwise, €2700 for 40 days is doable on a budget (assuming that travel costs have been taken into account), especially if you don't drink. US$2700 is less doable though. Best book if you want a realistic overview is Lonely Planet's Europe on a Shoestring. It's (reasonably) accurate and is in my opinion the best trip planning book you can buy.

I think the WWOOF thing works without a visa because it's a volunteer activity, so not a paid job.
You don't have any chance of getting a regular paid job as a tourist. An under the table job is possible, but even then not terribly likely.
I'd say if you want to stay in cheap hostels, research what is available so you can see what is a good location, a good hostel, and a good price. The odds are that if you just start traveling with no bookings, you won't run into really cheap places by accident.

Every farmer has his or her own policies. And of course there's no guarantee it will work out satisfactorily, so you should always have some reserve funds in case it's a bad situation.

csworrell, Don't lose hope! It's a bit challenging to plan a trip, but I'm sure you will be able to make it happen. I'll have another look at your Itinerary in the next day or two, to see if I can offer any further suggestions. Cheers!!!
