I was planning on exchanging currency at the airport I'm departing from. Can I use a debit card to get foreign money, or do I have to bring cash?

It depends on the currency exchange place as to whether you can use a debit card, so there's no blanket rule about that.
Remember the airport is generally the most expensive place to do such a transaction.
My preference is to find the best-value currency exchange place (in my case downtown) and get some currency beforehand, and then use my ATM card to get currency in the destination country. Always have multiple options available for getting money (an American Express card is a good backup).
