My son's fiance is from Columbia.....she and her older sister along with their mother managed to get entry to the US when the family was 'advised' to leave Columbia. Her father and two brothers, as well as the rest of the extended family are still in Columbia to this day. I have had a real lesson in immigration problems this past six months, believe me. Now the gov't is saying her moms visa has run out and she must return... this is a horrendous situation and a good example to me of why immigration policies must be corrected and reformed here in the states.
But I started to reply to this thread to say my son is 3/4 of the way toward his Bachelors in Spanish language, which he began after getting involved with Sonia. At a minimum, it would seem at least some of my future grandchildren will be bilingual....and that is a very good thing indeed. ;D I am after my daughter constantly to get Lizzy into some sort of language school or class....I am a firm believer that if they learn a second language when they are too little to know there is really a difference, then languages will come quite easy to them all their lives. And yes, there is much research to support this.

Ging: That's very cool indeed that your grandchildren will be bilingual! I doubt I'll have a child but if I ever do I'll definitely make sure they speak several languages. First of all they have to speak English and French (official languages of Canada) and Spanish -- 'cause that's my native tongue. Then I would hope they would speak one more language. It may very well be that they will speak the language my husband speaks. 'Cause I can almost guarantee that I will NOT marry someone who is Hispanic!!! Not that there's anything wrong with them I just don't see my life going that way. I for one believe languages are really important. It's best to teach them to people when they are really young! In Toronto (where I live) a lot of people speak 2 languages. Only a couple of my friends speak just one!!! My sister (1 year younger) has this insane gift for languages. She speaks English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian, and German! The Italian and German are not fluent..........French is close to fluency.....and Spanish, Japanese, and English are fluent. Sick sick sick I tell you! I on the other hand don't have the same gift for languages. The only reason I stuck with French for so long is 'cause I'm a bit of a masochist in that respect! As for the immigration thing........... It's tough, I know. I remember one time in High School a teacher I respected HIGHLY said that no one should be allowed to enter a country as a refugee. I became upset and told him I disagreed. Many people don't realize just how long it takes people to process the paperwork. 10 years or more in the case of the United States!!! Sometimes it really is a matter of life or death. It's a terrible choice to have to make and the people who make it don't do so lightly. I for one will not condemn or judge them. Having said that, I wouldn't encourage or pay for any of these endeavours either. Any family members who want to do that are on their own! I have hopes for a political future and am quite carefull in this respect............

one thing that concerns me, about these silly folks wanting to make English the only "Official" language, is that the shoe may be on the other foot in the future. when hispanics are in the majority, 2050 or so, that they might make *spanish* the only "Official" language in Texas!
