Anyone who has been to Europe please let me know, should I bother bringing a tent or not? I am probably going to backpack for 1-2 months. If it truly will help me save some money I might be for it, but I would like some experienced opinions. Thanks.

Where are you planning to go, and how are you planning to travel?
The one way I could see that a tent would make sense is if you are traveling by bike in the countryside. Otherwise, it would be cumbersome.

I give it the "hell no" for bringing a tent. Two main reasons: For the majority of places you are only allowed to camp in official campgrounds. These are way out of the way and unless you have a car, pretty inaccessible. Weight - can't even imagine carrying the extra weight (even if it's ultra light weight) All in all, it won't be a big money saver. You will have to pay to camp, as well you will have to pay to get to these campgrounds - then if you want to do any sightseeing, it's going to cost extra to commute to and from your camp site.

Gosh no! NO matter how light your tent is, it's still too heavy! You'll ditch it in a second!

My friend's uncle told us you could actually tent in the cemeteries. Something about public park, or something to that extent. Plus, no one will rob you in a cemetery. Any truth to this? Anyone done it? I bet it would save a damn lot of money on sleeping in hostels and the like...

I personally couldn't think of a freakier place to sleep! Plus, cemetaries aren't really central most of the time and I really doubt they would let people camp out there.

I don't see why cemeteries would be immune from robbery. If you are able to sleep there unnoticed, that means someone could sneak in unnoticed. I don't like the sound of it, although I'm sure someone has done it.

So, I take it no one knows the legality of it then? If it's permitted or not..?

No idea, sorry! If I were to really want to camp and not go on a camping site, i'd knock on someone's door and ask for a piece of land before i'd sleep in a cemetary, so can't help you with this. Have you tried to look for some camping sites? They might know more about this!

Like Jen I have no first hand info on this, but can offer that in Italy and Germany the cemetaries 'close' at dusk...most/many with a rather sturdy locked gate. So can see no way that 'camping' would be permitted there unless one was willing to be effectively locked in all night long. Where is this idea coming from? Just curious as it is one of the oddest to have been broached here thus far.

Hehehe, in fact it is Ging! I know that here in Québec it is "illegal" to be in parcs or cemetaries after 11. You can get fined if police find you there. I don't believe if they see you camping they'd appreciate the idea, especially with all the grave robbing going around!

In the UK it's illegal. All parks and cemeteries are locked up quite early (around 9pm- this is in the summer when it gets dark at approx 10:15, in winter they're locked around 5-6pm). It's probably the same in most EU countries- I've certainly never heard about the sleeping in cemetaries thing, although which sane person would want to sleep there?

some good advice i read on this topic: only bring a tent if you are planning a "camping" trip. if you plan to mostly hostel, but camp some of the time, *don't* bring a tent! Anyone who has been to Europe please let me know, should I bother bringing a tent or not? I am probably going to backpack for 1-2 months. If it truly will help me save some money I might be for it, but I would like some experienced opinions. Thanks.
