When I was in London years ago we arranged to watch the Changing of the Guard from inside the palace gates. You presented the gatekeeper with the invite from the Palace and you were admitted inside. It was pretty cool ;D
Anyway...
There was another group who were inside watching and we all got to talking and swapping stuff. Pins and coins mostly.
Do you ever take stuff with you just to trade?

Well, I don't bring things to necessarily trade, but I always care a couple dozen of postcards from my country and hometown! I find it fun to give away to people you meet that have left a mark and it's a good way to write down your email on it!
It's also a great way of thanking people for their help along the way!
Some hostels also have walls where people leave postcards from their country with a note about the hostel. I found it really interesting especially since I was staying with hospitality club people, I gave them each a thank you post card as I left!
xoxo Jen

in '99, i took a Dallas music fest t-shirt with me on the trip, specifically to trade. but no one i met in hostels had anything to trade, or just weren't interested in trading. so, the day before i flew home, i just gave it to a worker at the Generator who'd been helpful by suggesting a good, inexpensive, place to eat in London. - d Do you ever take stuff with you just to trade?

Nobody wants to trade. that went out in the 80's. The only thing that I have even witnessed was (like Libby indicated) someone had a Brazil football (soccer) jersey and while they were wearing it, someone offered them cash on the spot for it. he stripped it off and took the cash. That is the only thing that I have ever seen like that. Forget about bringing extra jeans to sell to the poor europeans. That kind of stuff ended with the cold war.
