Can anyone recommend a good hostel book to take while traveling. I've been having a hard time finding something current. The most current I've found is Hostels European Cities by Paul Karr 2002. Anyone??? thank you

I saw Paul Karr's first editions for UK and Ireland and thought they were very good, but I recently saw a later edition and it did not seem to be adequately updated. As far as Britain and Ireland are concerned: There will be a BUG guide out in February that will be as up-to-date as a printed guide can be. The YHA in England and Scotland each produce their own guides (not with independent reviews, of course). The Scottish Independent hostel organisation produces a very convenient summary sheet, which I think is available at entry airports etc . Ireland does similarly. While you certainly should carry guides, the most up-to-date info and reviews can be found on websites, such as this site, the BUG site, and (for Gt Britain) my site at www.uktrail.com .

The only hostel website worth looking at imo is hostelworld (www.hostelworld.com). They are pretty damn comprehensive and you can book with them through this website (this doesn't cost you anything, but helps to keep GFE running).
