For those in Canada using GSM / GPRS Cell Phones, I've just heard a rumour that Rogers has made an offer to buy Fido. Apparently, Fido are recommending their shareholders accept the offer. The details are still being worked out, but if accepted it's likely this will be completed by year end. This would make Rogers the largest Cell Phone network in Canada, with an estimated 5.1 million customers (compared to about 3.6 million with the "other" guys). Not sure at this point whether they plan on leaving the Fido brand as a separate entity?
Recently Telus also made an offer to buy Fido, which was rejected as the Fido board felt the offer wasn't substantial enough. That would have been a strange combination, given that the technology used by Telus and Fido are completely different; the phones wouldn't have been compatible at all?
I thought this might be of interest to others on this Board, as it might ultimately make it easier to travel in Europe with a Cell Phone (larger networks, better roaming agreements, etc.?). At the least it will provide Fido customers with MUCH better network coverage in their travels around Canada!!!
Along the same line, I also heard a rumour that Cingular in the U.S. is working towards a "buyout" of AT&T. I'm still trying to pin-down the accuracy of that one? Not sure what's with all these "buyouts" lately or whether it will ultimately benefit consumers? However, it's a sure thing that someone is making a few bucks on these deals!
Cheers!!!
