from Travel Insider's newsletter this week:
Construction for this year's five star Igloo Hotel will start in about a week at a site about 20 minutes west of Quebec City. It will be the only hotel in North America made entirely of ice and snow.
It will be open January 7 through the first week of April (depending on weather conditions). The hotel walls average four feet in thickness to guard against the northerly winds and the inside temperature averages about 25F. There are activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, sliding, skating and ice fishing available as well as a movie theatre, two art galleries, an indoor skating rink, spa, Jacuzzis, wedding chapel, a bar and regular toilet facilities (how do they stop the 'stuff' from freezing, I wonder?).
The hotel offers overnight stays, public visits and special events. There is a limited number of rooms and the hotel takes reservations up to a year in advance. 60% of guests come from the U.S. It will cost adults $14 to visit the hotel and children, seniors and students over 15 pay $12. Weekend rates are $302 per person and other nights are $40 less. More information on their website.

Ging, if you're coming up here I'll let you sleep in my backyard for only $100 and it's probably warmer than the hotel. ;D Seriously though, it's pretty neat - I can see why people would want to check it out, but sleeping in it on the other hand...

Nah...wasn't planning a trip. The whole idea of those places just fascinate me though. I had no idea there was one in Quebec...the only one I had ever heard about was the one in Sweden somewhere.
But it's tough to resist when I know I already have accomodations offered. ;D

Well, it's your choice, Toronto vs Montreal, who knows who deserves to win hehehe
But if you want, I have a country place, it's even colder there hehehe There is so much snow I could make you an igloo (we made one 2 years ago on christmas day! hehe)
Ok, I sound competive now hehehe not my intention!

What! You have a 'country place'?! With snow? Do you know how long since I've got to play in the snow and how I miss it? Be careful Jen...you could end up with a house guest! Maybe we could do a swap.....I could come there for some snow time and you could visit here for Florida beaches and sun. ;D

Well, my parents live in the countryside, about 45 min from Montreal. It used to be our "week-end" house while I lived at my parents, but now they moved up there. They are rarely there during the week though, as my mom has an apartment in the city not to have to travel to work every morning!
You're welcome ANYTIME Ging! We always love having guests over for a beer and some snow-fun! Can't wait till christmas, we'll build snowmans, go toboganning and just plain shove each others faces in the snow and throw snowballs!
I hate winter (especially today, we just got 40 CM of snow, so about 12 inches!) in the city, but when I go up there, i'm like a kid again!
xoxo jen

I thought it was a good deal! Cheaper than the hotel and warmer! ;D We actually got our first decent snowfall this morning. BEER AND SNOW? you're killing me here! That's the best part, just drop all the beer on the deck in the snow and it doesn't take up any room in the fridge!

We probably got more like 5-10cm... it's covering the ground now, but a lot of it melted when it hit the ground since it's not that cold out today.
