If you have a rough idea of your itinerary, try plugging it in at www.railsaver.com. I found this a great resource for deciding which pass to buy. Cheapest for me (on a 2 week trip around Central Europe) was buying point to point tickets and a Swiss Pass (well worth it if you are going to be taking the expensive lifts).
