I would never not wear my money belt When we were in Venice one of my girlfriends didnt feel like wearing her money belt and venice is famous for pickpocketing (especially walking across the bridge where u have a nice view of the bridge of sighs" and some kids came and started talking to her and some other kids tried to get into her pack, lucky for her some of our guy friends saw what was happening. Not a chance i am willing to take...but à chaque son goute. (to each his own...or something like that).

Until you have worn them, don't assume that they are as uncomfortable as you think! I have an Eagle Creek one, the elastic waist band is super stretchy and thin. I wear low-rise pants, and I can adjust it so that it is sitting under my pants...it is actually quite comfortable. Even if I am wearing a tank or short shirt, you can't tell it's there. Who knows, maybe you will be lucky and have no problems if you don't take one, and maybe you won't. As many others have said here though, getting stranded in a foreign country is a crappy end to a trip!

Both my wife and I had a money belt and we were glad we did. We had people attempt to pick pocket my wife twice. Once on the tube in London and then on the train in Paris. I would have to say, just from our limited experience, they tended to pick women as targets. I would highly recommend having one and carrying it at all times.

I can understand the reasoning behind having a moneybelt, and that is why I took one on my trip. However, I left it in my locker at the hostels the whole time and never had a problem. I would definitely still take one though in case leaving it at the hostel is not an option, or something people are comfortable with.

Being that my trip in June was my first trip abroad, I didn't really understand the need for a money belt. But I bought one anyway since so many people suggested it, and I'm really glad I did. I wore it almost every minute that I was awake in Rome and Florence, but didn't feel the need for it in Cinque Terre. I didn't experience any kind of pickpocketing (nor did i see any - a pleasant surprise!!), but it was really nice to not have to even worry about it.
My advice is to definitely pick one up, and use discretion as to when to use it. My EagleCreek silk one was very comfortable...
Happy travels!
