Emma-
In Spain, I would not miss Madrid. Madrid has killer nightlife and absolutely fantastic art museums. (Some argue that the Prado is the best painting museum in Europe and I tend to agree.) Madrid is also a very compact city and easily accessed by foot. (I walk very slow and could walk from the Palace to the Prado in 30 minutes.)
Also, my favorite city in Spain is San Sebastian. It is located on the northern coast in the Basque region. It has the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. Most of the guidebooks do not give San Sebastian much coverage. It is the safest city statistically on the Iberian pennisula, has great beaches and an old part of town with lots of cool bars.
I loved Amsterdam as well! I would not leave it out. It is so much fun.
I hope you have a great time on your trip.

With 4 months:
London, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome... obviously, just because they are there and one needs to create their own opinion of each.
Prague, Siena, Florence, Gimmelwald, Colmar, Rothenburg, Capri, Santorini... definately!
Madrid, Salzburg, Munich, Brugges, Dublin, Venice, Mosel Valley, Copenhagen & Malmo, Carcassonne, if you have the time.

if one goes as far east as Prague, Vienna is a must see!
the only reason to miss Vienna is if one doesn't want to go east. as nice as Prague may be <i've been there twice> Vienna has it beat. but, Vienna is more expensive.
Prague was also harder hit by the floods, per the news.

In Spain, one must go to Barcelona (for partying) and Granada (for the Alhambra). I was there in Ocotber 2001 and had a fantastic time !
Barcelona is such a cosmopoliton city. So many things to do, so many places to visit, super cool clubs at the Ramblas .... wonderful La Boqueira for breakfast !!!
