Scotland and Italy! Well, now you've settled on my two personal favs! Good choices! ;D
I too am a WWII buff so can direct you to many great sites relating to that. You'll have to add France back in, for a little while at least, if that is your interest as to a WWII person all roads lead to Normandy!
If you've the time and the funds, you can do what I did and get a one month UK/Britrail pass and a 3 month Eurail pass. A month in Eng/Scot/Wales and then over to Ireland (which is on the Eurail pass, NOT the Britrail pass) and then cross the channel for the duration of your time on the continent. Makes for a good trip.
Are you considering an open jaw ticket? For what you are planning I'd suggest it as the best option for you.

Open jaw is a ticket onward to one destination and return from another. Or A to B and C to A.

I had an open jaw......flew into London and home from Paris 4 months later. Keeps you from having to backtrack to someplace you've already been, and oftentimes the difference in price is less than what it would cost you to get ground transportation back to your departure city.

Kate,
this may be a no brainer to you, that's the way it struck me, but some people don't think of this:
if flying open-jaw, it's best to fly into and out of places you wish to spend the most time. it saves time on your rail pass requirement. (actually, it's a moot point w/ a flexipass. but you might not get a flexipass)
You can also fly w/ a cheap round trip ticket to, say, London. then catch an intra-europe 1-way flight to another, more distant, european city. from that city, travel back to london on the surface.
Some say London is a good place to start your europe trip, because it's not so "foreign." Others say it's better to end your trip in London, a very expensive city, after you've had more practice learning how to travel in a more frugal way. (also, if you start there, you might spend all your funds in that 1st city!)

well, my point is to fly places where you'll want to spend time. London is such a popular place to visit for americans, that's why i threw it out. that and there are often good air connections to there from all over the world. But, if you're in NYC, or someplace like it, you'd have direct connections anywhere
