I'm going to be somewhat bias here and say check out the Bulldog downtown, they've just done a lot of renovations in the past year, it's a decent place for sure........... and the guy I met who works there just left my house in Canada about 3 hours ago after a quick visit with me 
......... hmmmm and an aussie friend I met in Greece just left last tuesday - ahhhh the joys of travelling! ;D
I've heard that people have also really enjoyed the Flying Pig. The Bulldog is in the RLD as well, like I said before I felt safe.... You'll easily meet people to walk around with etc., just be aware of your surroundings and stick to the main streets at night where there are lots of people around.
