I have never been charged a fee by an ATM in Europe.....quite a difference from here in the US! ;D The only fees one might incur using them is those charged by your own bank for using an out of network machine....if they do. (and if they do, find another bank!)

If you're really worried about how to get to the hotel you can always set up a transport/car service from the airport to the hotel/hostel. You may pay a little more than a taxi, but in my experience its soooo well worth it! We flew into Paris and had a driver at the gate waiting for us! How nice! He grabbed our bags & took us to the hotel. I didn't have to worry about a thing. AND, he accepted my cash card! So I didn't need to have cash prior to landing in France! (I could put the tip & everything right on my card!)
I agree with Dustoffmom about the nap thing... especially after my last trip! DON'T nap if you can do it! If I stay up until at least 8pm their time I'm ok, if I nap I'm just shot for the whole trip... or at least until the day before I leave, which is just enough to screw up my flight home!
Good luck! ;D

In my case for Paris, we will take the Air France bus from the airport to our hotel. This is only 11.50 Euros each, compared to the RER (7.75 Euros) + metro (not sure).
Another option is one of the several shuttle services. You book ahead on the Internet with flight details. When you arrive, you give a call and then they come get you and take you to your door (probably with other stops on the way). These cost about 15 or 16 Euros per person (I think there's a discount after the first two people). One name I recall is Bee Shuttle.
Another option is the Roissybus, which goes to Opera Garnier. Then depending where you are staying, you could take the metro or walk.
If you do decide to take a taxi, this is about 50 Euros (depending on traffic and how good your driver is at finding where you stay). Of course you have to be sure to get a legitimate taxi.
Pickpocketing and thefts do occur on the RER and metro, and I know I won't be at top form and alertness when I arrive in Paris. In my case, 2 or 3 extra Euros for transport door to door will be worth it.

In almost every case, the shuttle is cheaper than the taxi, although not always as fast!

I'll be arriving at Gatwick at 7am. If the hostel doesn't let me check in until the afternoon, what can I do with my huge pack?

Almost all hostels will hold the luggage for you. Check ahead of time if you want to be sure.
