I have been trying really hard to find a good pair of walking shoes for my trip in June. I need some that will look good with anything - jeans, skirts, shorts. I prefer sandals and I am not very fond of tennis shoes. I found some Mephisto sandals (they remind me of Birkenstocks) that seem pretty good, but I wanted to get some recommendations. I live in Austin, TX, and I don't know what kinds of shoe stores we might have here.

I purchased a pair of Lowa light hiking shoes to wear during my trip, I also have a pair of Teva sandals for when its really hot and when I am not wearing my pack. If you are carrying a pack, sandals or tennis shoes might not give you the ankle support necessary to support the heavy load of a pack which leads to the possibility of ankle injury.

I personally have never worn Mephisto but I'm familiar with the brand.
As long as you are looking along that vein of shoes and in that price range.................I think you should totally check out ROCKPORT shoes!!!
I just bought myself a new pair of sandals yesterday!
I was deciding in between that and my usual NAOT sandals. I opted for Rockports.
The reason being that they really are better quality and with other shoes I find their expensive but need replacing often 'cause they don't last. I'm on my 3rd pair of NAOTs in as many years.
It comes down to a matter of personal preference. Check out Rockports though! I don't know about where you live but here (Toronto) the Rockports were slightly cheaper too!!! Despite the fact that I bought them at the Rockport store too...........
Happy Walking! ;D
EDIT: I should also add that you can find Rockports in outdoor outfitter type stores..........also at sports stores. You don't have to go to their own store!

I also recommend Rockport! I presently use a pair of "European Tour" models, and they are really comfortable! Unfortunately, I may have to leave these behind on my next trip, as I just want to take ONE pair of versatile shoes to save space and weight. I'm thinking of buying a pair of somewhat "dressy" Approach Shoes, which will be suitable both for city walking as well as light hiking. Good luck in your search. Cheers!!!

I bought a pair of Mephisto (from the Mobilis series) for my trip to Italy and never had the slightest problem with it. No blisters, no pains, despite the fact that I spent all day walking all about town. And they can be worn with anything from khakis to skirts.
I highly recommend them.

Rockports are okay if you do NOT have wide feet.
For those who need a wider toe box, I recommend Eccos or Mephistos. Mephistos are awfully expensive, but they are very well made and will last forever. (Finally broke down and bought a pair last spring.)
For summer travel I usually bring a pair of sandal-like but not open toed Eccos.
Other well-made, comfy yet stylish shoes are Riekers, Dansk and Naots.

Just went to a Mephisto (makes me think of Faust) store yesterday to czech 'em out. They were nice, but that US$300 price tag seemed too much!
My $50 Rockports seem like a better way to go, although i need new ones soon. Must break them in before my Spring trip.

So remember how I said the Rockports were fantastic - I take it ALL BACK! When push came to shove the ankle support was NOT enough. The straps would come off if you tightened them too much and would also slip off if they were too loose. I twisted my ankle in Switzerland and then headed for the uneven streets of Florence. The lack of ankle support combined with the twist killed my calf. I managed to do some minor damage and now I live with calf muscles in spasms from time to time. For God's sake make sure you have appropriate ankle support or you will live to regret it!

I am having a shoe dilemma as well. Are sandals okay to wear around cities? I'm not sure I would walk around NYC in them, so maybe not europe. Hmm...

Sandals are fine, if you are talking about flip flops (thongs to some of us), I'd say no.
Flip flops are great for the beach, in the shower, on the train etc. but if you are going to a restaurant, you will stand out.
Proper sandals are definately OK though.

I was thinking about getting a good pair of Tevas (or something similar) and using them as shower shoes as well. Yeah flip flops would be a nightmare!

really flip flops a nightmare!?! ahhh that sucks! I was planning on bringing a really good pair of runners that I'd wear sightseeing basicly most of the day & then a pair of flip flops to wear with my skirts & stuff for dinners going out to clubs & bars & obviously for showers & beaches. I'm a really gonna need to get a pair of "real" sandals? I hate them(no offense to anyone) I find then kinda ugly, lol I'm I way off?

Well, maybe you would be okay if you are really used to flip flops. Walk a few miles in them before you go, just to be safe. I would just have a problem with the thong part in between the toes. I definitely wouldn't get something you think is ugly though, it's not worth it.
