Has anyone else encountered this problem synchronizing train arrival and train departure times? For example, my flight leaves from marseille to barcelona on the 19th of july at 8:00 (i get there at 9:10)... but the only train that can get me from lyon to marseille in time is the 20:00 to 23:00 train...on the 18th of july (as in the night before).. that gives me like 5 pointless hours of waiting around in a strange city.. is that wise? i mean, is it easy to just go to the marseille airport directly and wait there for 5 hrs, or will i find myself stranded with no cabs etc to the airport? another option could be doing lyon to madrird then madrid barca... but that way i get to barca at 14:30, and thus practically lose a nice day at the beach there.. also.. in italy, i'm going to be in amalfi..but i need to leave for home from the airport in rome, not naples (due to ticket pricing etc...).. if my flight's in the evening (say 7 ish), what time should i leave amalfi to avoid missing it? like can i spend the morning/noon there, and THEN head for rome, or will i not make it in time? (say i wanna go by ordering a cab so that i can choose when i wanna leave) thanks a lot. sorry this is a bit long and complicated

Well that's the challenge ... getting all the pieces to fit the puzzle. Sometimes that means compromising. What about leaving for Marseille earlier in the day, and spend the afternoon and evening (and the night) in Marseille? Another option is to stay at a hotel near the airport, this way you can arrive pretty late, get a good night sleep, and be at the airport without a problem (if you stay in Marseille, there will be busses/taxis to the airport). www.mrsairport.com/eng/acces/acces_bus.jsp#mars as you can see, the first busses leave at 6.10 in the morning, and take approx. 25 minutes.

thanks! now why didn't i think of that?
perfect, i'll leave lyon around noon-ish (found a train), spend the night at the Etap hotel IN the airport (;D), and head to barcelona from there.
what about my amalfi to rome situation (above)?

If you would rely on trains, you can spend some time of the morning still in Amalfi, but you should be leaving around noon. Taking the train at 12.41 at Vietri sul M-Amalfi will get to Ciampino at 16.07. (if that's to soon, there are also train at 13.03 and 13.57, that should get you to Ciampino on time, but the last one, should arrive at 17.57, for a flight at 19.00 this leaves not a lot of room (as you have to get to Check-in). So basicly you have the choice between the 12.41 and the 13.03 train. (both will go via Naples and Rome, so maybe you could sneak out in Rome for a last gelati, on a terrace). From the Central Station you should have enough connections to the airport. Check www.bahn.de, and fill in Amalfi, and Rome Ciampino (or Fiumicino), depending on which airport you will be flying from. You want to add some extra time, to have some extra room, in case of delays (trains), or time to search check-in. I usualy try to show up around 1 and a half hour before the flight. (Most companies will have check-in till 30-45 minutes before flights -> doublecheck your company, as they all differ). This is usualy also on time to get a windowseat. It gives time to relax at the airport. (for a brief moment you are relieved to have no big pack to take care off, but after a while airports get boring.)

as you might not speak German, when you go to www.bahn.de, on that page near the top is a red horizontal stripe. the second button from the right sez "Internat. Guests." click there to get English. - d

I usualy try to show up around 1 and a half hour before the flight. (Most companies will have check-in till 30-45 minutes before flights -> doublecheck your company, as they all differ). Good call for flights within Europe, but for your flight back to Lebanon, it will be classed as an international flight so you need to check in at least 2 hours before departure. Leaving on the train Herrbert recommended from Amalfi should be fine though.

These are the directions to the hostel...
From Salerno train station, take Sita bus (every hour) for Amalfi. Get off in Atrani village, 100 mt. before Amalfi center.
so there's probably no train to amalfi?
but i also checked trains to sarento and got nothing...

herrbert, i went to bahn.de, but when i entered amalfi and rome, they said they couldn't find any trains.. do they not make trains that go from amalfi to rome? is there another way to get there and back? I checked it yesterday, and it did. Are you in the English version or in the German one? In German a lot of the names are different (like Rome = Rom), this is the link to the English version: www.bahn.de/p/view/international/englisch/international_guests.shtmlI just filled in: Amalfi, and Rome Ciampino (the airport), and it gave the results. If the same pages seems to keep returning, it can be that it is asking to fill in your age (at the bottom of the page) Edit: I am not sure if this works, but it worth a shot: reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?ld=212.18&seqnr=1&ident=1t.02345518.1175123062&OK#focus if you follow this link, you only need to fill in an age, as you only need the timetable, it doesn't matter what age)

Use the English version of the Trenitalia site for Italian trains if it's getting too confusing with bahn.de (same as you did for the French train system on sncf.fr).
