Probably true in the 'tourist' areas but we rented a villa 3 summers running outside Albueferra (sp) and 5 miles inland from the coast virtually no one spoke English. I'll grant you this was 12 years ago now, and things very well might have changed since then.....but the Portugal I knew was decidedly non-English speaking. The grocers and I had a great pantomine going though.  |

reallly, Ginger? wow. spent time in Lagos & Faro last year, both close to albufeira. seldom met anyone monolingual. (just don't try to speak Spanish, they don't learn that one! Historical issues.)

Hey I'm dutch too, I also speak pretty good  english.. a bit of french and german.. and a very little bit of swedish.. .. I'm trying to teach myself with this course I found on the internet..  .. If I put it like this I seem really smart:p If I can help out with the document you're planning on putting together, I'd love to.. just tell me what to translate, and I will, if I know how to translate it  I think it's a great idea.. good thinking Cat!.. So let me know if I can do anything to help Mieke |

like, i'm sure everyone would need Dutch translations! ;D i've wanted to speak with a Dutch speaker who didn't speak English maybe once in my life! [they *all* speak english, it seems] Same is true in Portugal. a Portugeese speaker who speaks no English is probably Brazilian! I'm happy to help out with the Dutch translations. I might be able to manage French, but I'm sure there are some others around who speak the language much better than I do. Pfft to you! Probeer deze zin maar eens te vertalen. Lukt niet? try this. . . can't get any further.  i meant above that every Dutch speaking person i'd met, aside from young children, could speak half a dozen languages. so English translations are not necessary. i was complimenting the linguistic abilities of your countrymen! - d Pfft to you! There you go, your first encounter with the Dutch language. We are terrible, aren't we, for speaking our languages. :> And thank you for the compliment, that's why we study all those languages, really. We have no self esteem. |
