;D Just have to say I went to Atlanta to attend the opera this past weekend. Wagner! It was fabulous indeed. And before you all sneer ;D I will say opera is my passion and something you must 'experience' in person to really know what it is like. It's an amazing thing....try it!

I've never been to an opera-I'm curious to how you know what is going on. Is it obvious enough that I could piece it together do you think?

They have a 'screen' (long and narrow) that hangs above the stage that has text translation of what is being said. Not word for word, but enough to understand and follow along. And some have full librettos that they give you which is the whole thing, word for word. But that's really going away now with the screens and is difficult anyway. You miss most of the 'action' with your head down trying to read.
That said, no matter what language is being sung, the music often is all you need to know generally what's happening. Sad, happy, etc. And such glorious music it can be!
Opera is like nothing else, nothing. But it is so different in person than seeing it on TV or movie. That's awful I think. You will either love it or hate it.....no middle ground. BUT, you can't come down on either side until you have experienced it for yourself.
ging apologies for going on and on and on ;D ;D

I just LOOOOOOVE musicals (have seen about 15, I think), but I'll be going to my first opera in December. I'm going to see Carmen, I know a bit of the story, so if I don't understand the lyrics, I won't be bored. I agree with dustoffmom, I think I'll either hate it, or love it.

Well gal you surely have a great one for your first! If you don't LOVE Carmen then you will never love any opera at all. Look it up before you go and read the story....it really adds to the enjoyment to know the storyline.
ging - who is soooooo envious! Carmen!
And be sure and report back after you've gone!!

Hey Ging! Why don't you come over and see Carmen with me? I'll be going to see Carmen on December 28, and I think you'll be in London (mmmmmm, London ) by then. It's just a one-hour flight away, you know. I'll even pick you up at the airport! Cat

Sorry to be slow Cat.....missed this post. Kim had to 'nudge' me! Tempting, tempting indeed and I thank you for the invite. Wish I had know it a week or so ago. Sadly, will not be in London that night but in Galway, Ireland and just yesterday made reservations for 10 nights worth of travel there. Could have reversed the whole trip and maybe gotten over there, but have had a bit of a time of it finding places open in Ireland this time of year and hate the thought of beginning again. But hey, maybe we can get something worked out for this coming summer? Not sure yet when or where I'll be going, but it will be somewhere! That was about the nicest thing anyone has offered in quite a while.....thanks again so much for thinking of me! ging who hates to miss an opera anywhere!

Wel, it was just a thought. You have been so helpfull to everyone on this board and I really enjoyed your travel updates. We surely could plan something this coming summer. Just let me know how and when! How long are you staying in the UK and Ireland then? By the looks of it, you have quite a trip planned (again ) Cat BTW: Carmen plays on Dec. 28, 29, 30 AND Jan. 3, 4. Tempting, huh

Your boyfriend has got very good taste! ;D You MUST see at least one show on Broadway when visiting The Big Apple. I saw Les Miserables (my alltime favorite) and Jeckyll and Hyde.
Kim, will you be enjoying yourself a bit or are you just tagging along for him?

He really wants to see Miss Siagon and I want to see the Lion King!

You won't get kicked out if you wear jeans, but I saw quite a few people really dressed up, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to pack some lightweight fancy clothes. But, that's up to you. Some tips: Don't forget the fine art of 'upgrading'! When you take your seat, wait till the curtain opens, run for the best seat you see and grab it! This goes for London as weel as Broadway. We once payed about ten pounds and ended up in a forty pound seat. My expierience is that you can get the cheapest tickets at the theatre itself. Do not buy them of streetvenders like we once did. We payed for the ticket and had to pay the same amount for 'reservation costs'. A complete rip-off. Cat

>>>>>Don't forget the fine art of 'upgrading'! When you take your seat, wait till the curtain opens, run for the best seat you see and grab it! <<<<< ;D Thanks for the tip Cat....I would have been really hesitant to do it, might be severely frowned on! As for the tickets, was the rip off experience you mentioned a result of the half price booth? Every guide book suggests using that place for tickets......with the caveat to use the real, official half price stand. I'm looking forward to taking in some shows. Something I did not do last trip. Be sure and report back on the opera now! I'll be anxious to hear whether you are a new convert or not! ging
