very funny david yup salmon are healthy! but beware of how much atlantic salmon you eat! i'm not really up on pacific salmon and fish farming, but any atlantic salmon you buy in a store is from a fish farm and you can't eat that too much... there's a lot of toxins built up in them from anti-biotics and other such things.... if you buy fresh salmon... try and avoid the grey meat close to the skin. tha'ts where it all builds up. but now we can move off of fish and on to more exciting topics:D

Well now Jules...I read a few years ago that children and 'fertile' women should not eat some fish more than once a week...and I recall it was tuna and salmon as listed as culprits to avoid in excess. Is this along the lines of what you are referring to?
And Publix...which has off and on bourbon basted fresh salmon is simply the best! Anytime they have it I buy.....quick grilling and you are in for some delicious dinner!
How did you arrive at this line of study? Just curious. I would have never guessed you could get a masters in 'fish'....NOT meaning to demean it in any way, just wondering, is it more of a biology type thing or actually as topic specific as it seems?

ah ginger... my undergrad is environment... but i specialised in physical geography... more specifically i study rivers (fluvial geomorphology). my masters project has two parts. the first is validating a new technique to mesure water velocity using a video camera. the second is to use this technique to characterize salmon habitat. part of the problem (although not all of it) is the destruction of their fresh water habitats. so while i study fish habitat i don't actually study the fish themselves. i consider myself a geographer and not a biologist. my masters is technically in earth sciences.

COOL! I like the sound of that....a 'geographer'! And so, may I ask, if your specialty is rivers, have you had the opportunity yet to visit some of the world's great rivers? Hmmmm....holding true to the subject of this board, methinks you could get some drop dead travel out of this in the end! Amazon, Nile, Rhine, Ganges....gosh, the list is endless! So, will this lead to a private sector job or is it in more of a government situation? Not trying to be nosey, I am genuinely interested. ging

i have not seen any of the above mentionned rivers... however i'm always very interested in the rivers that run through cities... most are relatively tame rivers (very slow water velocities)... but the one that flows through luzern is nuts! i'm amazed it was built along! but the amazon and the nile are definately on the list. amazon amazes me simply cause i can't fathom how enormous it is. i mean i live next to the st-lawrence river which is enormous but i still can't wrap my brain around the amazon. the nile is cool because of how it has been used... it has the oldest flood records in the world. the whole ancient egypt thing is a big draw for me... i took classes on it in university...
i don't really want to work for the government... things i've heard just don't inspire me so much. its one of those things... i really don't want to live in the US (nothing personal it has a lot to do with health care) although it would be really cool to work for the USGS. what i'd really like is to work in environmental consulting (so private) anywhere in canada or the uk (i'm a citizen). so in the next couple of months the job hunt will seriously begin.
