more specifically i study rivers (fluvial geomorphology). wow, Jules! very impressive. is your river study limited to freshwater, or are you also into the fresh/salt mix in estuaries? you mention an interest in river flows through cities. many of the big cities on rivers are also seaports, the interaction between river & sea seems fascinating to me! [my high school field ecology class took a trip to Texas' Gulf Coast and intercoastal waterway. the fish & birds were amazing down there!] i also wonder about measuring river flow: i know that with estuaries the water actually flows upstream sometimes as the tide comes in. [the water velocity measurement via video thing is what made me think of estuaries] - d

yup i only deal with freshwater really. its not the same forces that shape the river channel when tides are involved. doesn't interest me as much. biologicially estuaries are facinating places, too. rivers like the mississippi are cool cause of how they transport sediment... it keeps changing its path... it should have changed path decades ago except ppl built so many levis etc... that's why its so vulnerable to flooding... its pretty cool.
you can measure water velocity regardless of which direction its moving... i mean you get eddies around brige pillars and you can measure those, too.

i'm no fluvial geomorphologist but, if you haven't seen it yet, you might find the way Austrians have managed the Danube in it's path through Vienna to be interesting. <based on your stated interest in river/city interaction> - d

I don't know if we're still keeping this going, but I'll do it up anyway!
1) Name: Technically it's Alexandra, but Alex will suffice
2) Height: 5'9
3) Occupation: Hairstylist
4) What do you do on Sundays? Sleep in, catch up on all the housework that hasn't been finished all week, plan my many dream vacations in my head, go to Chapters & read a travel book while sampling some new coffe-related beverage, snuggle with my bunny (a real rabbit, not a pet name for a loved one lol)
5) What languages can you speak? English and enough French to get by on. I can understand it better than I can speak it.
6) Who has had the most influence on you? My Grandfather who kept going as long as he could (swimming & coffee trip every day until he was around 85) & my sister who inspires me to be fearless like her & take more chances (she's been to Ireland & Australia alone & is about to go to Korea)
7) What's on your "To Do" list? Do we really have time for this? Pay Visa & Mastercard bills, fix the dishwasher, call the Ministry of Health about my new card, get more litter for Emma's box, start Christmas shopping, plan Customer Appreciation Day @ work, start new gym workout plan... I don't even want to think about the rest yet!
8) Discribe your living situation: Ugh. I live with my boyfriend Mat & my darling bunny Emma (we all share the master bedroom) in a house along with Nick <a friend from highschool>, Neil & Justin <2 of Mat's co-workers> & whoever else is visiting for the time being <right now being my sister & her boyfriend> Good thing it's a big house!!
9) Previous Halloween costumes: naughty school teacher, princess, cavewoman, vampire... nothing overly creative. Although when I was the naughty teacher my boyfriend was the "teachers pet" including white shirt buttoned up wrong, lipstick trailed from his lips to his neck & a phone # on his hand is blue pen with Mrs. Anderson next to it....
10) Your dream job: When I'm working in the salon I will build in my home one day... or a travel-journalist specializing in guides for females travelling solo...

3) Occupation: Crummy job in marketing and an aspiring film maker. 6) Who has had the most influence on you? Aside from my family and a couple of my English professors, I would have to say Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Fellini, and David Letterman. 10) Your dream job: To direct my own feature film. an acquaintance of mine, he married a friend i'd known since childhood, has the same aspiration. he's made some short films, i haven't seen any of them, and is usually looking to his next movie project. edit: what town near Denver? my brother lives in Louisville, between Denver & Boulder.

I actually live in unincorporated Adams County. Right on the border of Denver and Arvada. But, I work in Boulder, so I get to drive through Louisville every day.
I'm actually working on a movie right now. I would say film, but unfortunately it's on video. I don't think it's going to be that good, but when you get the opportunity to work on a movie in Colorado, you need to take it and hope for the best. You know what they say about experience.

I read a few years ago that children and 'fertile' women should not eat some fish more than once a week...and I recall it was tuna and salmon as listed as culprits to avoid in excess. isn't that dealing with mercury poisoning? as i understand, it people who've put too much mercury in the marine food chain. - d

salmon has a lot do with the fact that they are now farmed. they accumulate alot of toxins in their flesh (predominantly the grey part close to the skin). you know anti biotics and shit... but that remains a problem for anything living below the enclosures... like lobster...
The mercury thing is because of bioaccumulation... mercury is stored in the fat cells (if i remember correctly) and that gets magnified up the food chain... culminating in us...
