I haven't seen this addressed specifically, but perhaps it has been.
What sort of iPod charger would work well for both Britain and continental Europe (Madrid and Amsterdam)? My daughter wants to take hers. She's really good at keeping her backpack light otherwise.
I'm a bit nervous about how big the necessary converter(s) might be, though. Will we need two? Are they absolutely safe to use without destroying the iPod?
We're staying in hotels with safes, so I hope the security aspect will be okay. She won't wear it walking around the city.

Chances are that the current charger will be ok. Check for the voltage requirements - it'll be marked on the unit somewhere. If it says 110v/220v or 100-240v etc then it'll be fine. Then all you'll need is plug adaptors (UK one and European 2 pin one).
If you need a separate transformer (unlikely) then you can get them over here. I've got one to run my US Xbox - it only cost about £15. That said, it's pretty heavy, around 1kg or so. They are really simple and reliable - you just plug the US 2 pin plug into the unit, then plug the cable from the transformer into the mains.
With regards to walking around with it, I'd avoid it. However, you can minimise the risk by using aftermarket headphones - using the standard white ones is shouting out to be mugged.

Probably a bit late, but anyway a personal FM radiio (with headphones) is probably a much wiser choice than ipod or similar for travelliing. They are cheap, small and do not use a whole lot of power. They allow you to tap in to local media instead of shutting yourself out from it. There are some great stations in Europe and you miss out on them if you bring your own music with you - one of the reasons we travel, after all, is to experience something different. Only thng is, they're not so great on aeroplanes or trains.

On a similiar, but off note, do many people bring Ipod (or similarly cd players, etc) for use when travelling.
I mean for the plane ride over, any train/bus rides or what?

I brought an mp3 player during my 2 month trip to europe. It was fine, i usually used it during the train and sometimes at night to fall sleep or to block out some person snoring. It came very handy on a sleepless night in Amsterdam. I won't go into details as to why though

i brought an mp3 player, too. but i bought one that took batteries so i wouldn't have the charging issue... esp since many of the charging ones you have to charge with a usb cable on a computer and many internet places don't let you plug anything into their computers.
stanncie... i take it you are a big oasis fan?

My mp3 player charger had the appropariate voltage for europe though so i only need a plug adapter. and yes jules i've been an oasis fan since they started. I'm on a huge ryan adams kick at the moment though

Well, now I'm too curious! It's probably the same reason as we had in Bruges, unfortunately I didn't have a mp3 player with me!!

jules , that is quite cool, i met noel gallagher years ago and he was very nice. I've seen them live lots of time and they are always very good which can't be said for other bands that are very good on record. BTW maybe there should be a music section?? admins???

If you pick up the adapters from the apple website that will work for pretty much anywhere in the world. All you do is take the plug off the charger that you have for your ipod and then attach the correct one for where you are at that point in time. The charger that you have will do the rest.
