Will have about $4000 (AUD!) on top of airfare, hostel accomodation, food, eurail pass - is this going to be a decent amount of spending money for my trip?

Do you mean that the $4000 AUD will be used as spending money and not part of your main budget (hostels, food, tickets, etc)? Just making sure because if so, it should be more than enough. I never buy anything when I'm travelling though - I can always get it in my own country

Yeah I've saved enough to cover my flight, insurance, food, accomodation and its just spending money I need to save now and should have roughly $4000 AUD to cover anything that pops up along the way. Not a big drinker but will be going out to clubs a bit! I think I should be right - not going to buy to much hopefully, not if I can buy it here anyway!

Some cities you are visiting are expensive (London for sure), so be a little bit careful with your money there, but I think 4000 AUD (or 2300 euro's) will do the trick for your trip.
A smart way to save some money in Berlin is to have your meals and hostel in the Eastern part of the city. e.g Opposite the Circus hostel, there is a good Mexican restaurant, that can give you a great meal for around 10 euro.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply!! As well as the $4000 I have for spending money, I have $1500 for food $1500 for hostels $1200 for transport (about $1000 of that for eurail pass) Is you think this is reasonable? We plan on staying in large dorms whenever possible. As far as food goes, we are going to skimp on most meals I think.. pretty much live on toast and fruit for breakfast, sandwiches and fruit for lunch and dinners might occasionaly be somewhere nice but nothing to fancy..

I think you will find that accommodation can be really expensive (at least in the big-cities), but you can normally find a good meal for little, if you just ask the locals. Don't skip too many meals, because you will need the energy, when you are traveling and walking around a lot. In most travelbooks you will find some recommondations for cheap but good restaurants - make sure that you have these addresses with you.
As long as you have a global idea what you are spending, you should be more than OK, with your budget. I think you will see, that you will spend a little more on hostels, and a little less on food.
If you want to save some money, than take a good look around in the streets near to your hostel, and see if there are some places that offer breakfast buffets. In a lot of Hostels you can get breakfast (if they are not included), but they are almost everytime more expensive than other places in town. You will not save a lot, maybe 1 euro a day, but if every euro or dollar counts it can add during a trip.
If you really want to save money than go for a supermarket, and make a nice breakfast-picknick at some good place.
Did you make a good calculation when you decided to take a railcard? Sometimes it better to use low-budget flights, and some point-to-point tickets for travels by train.

Sometimes it better to use low-budget flights, and some point-to-point tickets for travels by train. I have to agree with this statement. It depends on your choice of cities and the order you're going about. In fact, I am not using a rail pass at all. I'm purchasing budget flights via easyJet - just more efficient in terms of cost and time! P.S. $4000 AUD is definitely enough spending money for your trip! Just making sure that it wasn't actually your total budget
