Hello everyone, I will be going to London, Paris, Venice, Florence, and Rome in September and I was wondering. What kind of cltohes do I need? Can it get really cold, specially in London? or should I expect more summery weather? Oh, I'll be there for 3 weeks. I'm slowly buying the things I need for my trip (books, backpack, clothes, etc) and I wasn't sure if I could get by with a fleece sweeter and a rain jacket/wind braker kind of thing or if I should plan on taking something warmer. Thank you everyone, I love this website!

Hi Sil,
September is normaly a good month, also in London. (and the last years we have been spoilt with good weather in September). In Italy it can still be really warm. It is always posible that you will have a couple of days of rain. Last July was really wet ... so you never know. It is recommendable that you bring some rainprotection.
You could opt for a good cover for you bag, and a plastic poncho raincoat. It looks silly, but you will keep dry, you should be able to get these for one-time use for as less as a dollar. They weigh almost nothing, and they are very small so easy to fil into your bag, easily.

Ah, London.... you should always assume it'll rain but the city has seen its fair share of sun. For example, last time I visited, it was in April and for the entire month it was like 20-26 C and not a drop of rain every single day I was there.
Pack a small flat mini umbrella with you and you'll be good to go.

The cities you've listed are usually warm during the days in September, but evenings (in London and Paris) will need a light jacket, just in case the temperature drops a little. Italy is still gorgeous in September, however...the Mediterranean has autumn storms that can strike in September, so be prepared to do indoor sightseeing (musuems, shopping, drinking coffee - all good!). Your fleece sweater and rain jacket should be fine for that time of year.

London in September I would expect four seasons in one day. Yes it can be really nice and it was last year but with all UK weather expect the unexpected! I wouldn't pack for a polar expedition but light clothing that can be stuffed into a daybag and whipped out ina shower is a good bet

sil, I didn't make it to London last year (I'm hoping to get back to the U.K. this fall) but I was in Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome in Sept. / Oct. 2006 and the weather was great (not too hot or too cold)! However, "there are no guarantees"! As the others have pointed out, you should be prepared for rain. During my trip (about two months) I only had to deal with rain for three days (coincidentally, all during the Italian portion of my trip). If you don't have rain gear yet, have a look at travelstore.ricksteves.com/catalog/index.cfm?fuseaction=product&theParentId=125&id=321. This type of Poncho is very compact when it's compressed in it's case, so it's easy to fit into a Daypack. However, trying to fit it back into it's case is a bit of a "challenge", to say the least! The nights can be a bit chilly so a light coat and sweater (for "layering") is a good idea also. Happy planning!
