Kim, what bank do you have? I've been told (some time ago) that with TD Canada Trust, I could use the debit feature in the states, but it would cost $2.50 per transaction. I've never tried, though.

back in '04, i couldn't get cash w/ my ATM card while in Italy. had to use my credit card to get cash advances. [had no problems in Spain, or anywhere else on the trip] I also read on another forum of someone who couldn't withdraw cash from Spain ATMs - but could from everywhere else he tried. Just another reason to have a backup plan.

Must indeed depend on your bank. From Sept 02 through this year March I have used my debit cards, either Compass Bank and/or Fifth Third...both US banks in all of UK, Ireland, BeNeLux, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Czech, Switzerland, et al. And have never had a problem. Am I just lucky? Maybe...but the debit card works for me, thus far every time, without glitch.and without any added costs. Be sure and call your bank and let them know you will be 'overseas' though to avoid potential problems.
How many times regs have we had this 'card cost' discussion? I remain amazed at the diferences between Canadian and American banks...heck, even differerences between US banks!
