Sad to hear that the Henry IV didn't work out, I thought maybe I had found the place to stay. Oh well, back to the drawing board I guess... ... if anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know. thanks all!

AIJ was fine. I stayed in a quad which had a private bath. It was very clean and quiet (I was a few floors up). I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if I were hostelling. The Metro is right around the corner which is very convenient.
Here is what I wrote about it in '99: The room was tidy and spotless, but the bathroom got all wet from the shower, and the water pressure was uneven. Breakfast was half of a very crusty baguette with jam and butter, and coffee or hot chocolate. If morning noise is a problem for you, ask NOT to be on the ground floor (loud groups of school children). The very nearby Metro stop makes up for the not-so-central location*. Character: B, Cleanliness: A, Location: B, Staff: A, Value: B+
*Now that I know Paris better, AIJ is close to the Marais and Bastille, which is still very central, just in a different way than Ile de la Cite.
