well curfews vary from hostel to hostel. you jsut have to choose your hostel acordingly. some are 11 (i avoided those). those i stayed in, if they had a curfew, it was 1 or 2 in the morning.

like jules said most hostels just have the midday lockout which can be annoying if one day you just want to vegetate all day long. I didn't stay at any hostels that had an early curfew though, just a couple had like a 2 a.m. curfew but those were the minority. For some reason the mountain hostel in gimmelwald is very strict about the midday lockout, so one day I just sat outside and conversed with the cows till I was let back in

Some places in built-up neighborhoods have to have curfews to keep the neighbors happy. It's sort of a zoning thing. I suspect that some hostels might think that such a rule will keep hard drinkers/partiers away also, but I don't know for sure.

Good to know... though I always love a festive night on the town, I'm not looking to COMPLETELY party my trip away... but I'm glad I was made aware that there are, in fact, hostels with curfews. And I think at some point during the trip, I'll purposely choose a hostel with a curfew... so I'll know it'll be more calm at night... Course.. I also plan on getting a 'real' hotel room for a night every so often... but who knows? I've got no plan... and I love it... we'll see where the wind takes me.
Thanks!!!
