It is now Sunday night and I am getting over the effects of my first weekend in Prague. What a place!
On Friday, I thought I had secured an apartment so I went over to the language school I will be attending to share the good news. Coincidentally, the current class was "graduating" that day and there was champagne aplenty and a lively atmosphere. I met up with one of the guys running the school and we left from there across town to go to a local pivnice (pub) called Zanzibar in the Vinohrady part of town near Namesti Miru to have some dinner and a few drinks. The beer here, by the way, is excellent is cheaper than just about any other drink. My Czech is pretty bad, but I am able to order and say "please" and "thank you." Most people speak at least a little english, too, which doesn't hurt my cause.
We parted ways and I met up with my high school friend who is here filming a movie with Industrial Light and Magic. We went to a great pub in the Mala Strana part of town called "U Maleho Glena," or Little Glenn. This is a very cosy (and smoky) pub with a downstairs area featuring live bands. We hung out there for a while and had a few cocktails while enjoying a live jazz band in the pub's snug surroundings.
From there we went to Kampa Island, a small beautiful island in the Vltava River, just off the Charles Bridge. I don't remember the name of the place, but I will definitely be visiting it again. It was a larger, livelier place with a DJ spinning house music. The walk there was a highlight, though, as Kampa Island is incredible. Kampa was devastated by the floods last August, and you can see the water lines on the buildings on the second floor, but it is back above water and cold beer is once again on tap.
Overall, it was a great night. All the places I visited are worth repeating, in my opinion, and I look forward to doing just that!
