When I correspond with people back home, everyone asks me what the situation is like here regarding the war in Iraq, so I thought I would put a small entry here.
I have been watching CNN a lot and seen anti-war protests occurring all over the globe. The other day, my author friend in San Francisco wrote a vivid piece on the protests in my old home that led to over 1,400 arrests.
Surprisingly, nothing is happening here. There is no violence, no protests, and really nothing out of the ordinary. I saw a candlelight vigil for peace one night in Old Town Square, but it was nothing near the demonstrations I have been seeing from San Francisco to London to Lahore in size or scale.
From a political standpoint, the Czech government supports the war and has even contributed a token number of support troops. From my conversations with people here, I get the impression that no one likes any kind of war, but that has not led to any demonstrations.
I have noticed, though, that Czechs do not like calling attention to themselves and keep a very low profile and do not like to cause a scene. Perhaps keeping to this etiquette is the reason for no organized protests here? My best guess is that popular opinion here is divided just as anywhere else.
