Ireland stubs out smoking
From: The Guardian
Ireland's ban on smoking in pubs, restaurants and all workplaces will begin on March 29, the government announced yesterday. This follows two months of bureaucratic wrangling and threats of legal challenges. Prison cells, hotel rooms, psychiatric hospitals and nursing homes will be exempt. The anti-smoking group Ash hailed the national ban, the first in the world, as the health initiative of the century. Smokers and employers caught breaking it will be fined €3,000 (about £2,000). Hotel and pub owners are to consider a high court challenge, claiming the ban will be impossible to enforce.
But the Dublin tourist board is to use it as a marketing device, under the slogan "A breath of fresh air". Companies have already begun advertising canopies, heaters and portable ashtrays for smokers left standing in the cold.

Ain't I glad! I know it's not fun for smokers, but i'm sure happy about it, if I ever visit Ireland, I'll truly appreciate it!

had i known of this before i bought my plane tix, a year ago, i might have opted to visit Ireland! it'd be cool if they get so much more tourism because of this that other places decide to follow suit. - d

It will be interesting to see how successfully the law is enforced. Some of the smokiest air I've ever breathed in my life was in a Galway pub.

The UK ban (Scotland first a while ago, and just recently England) bans are working great. My daughter noted a few renegades while we were just in London, but I did not notice any. For the most part, there's pretty good compliance. Considering the rule came into effect August 1, this is pretty good.
We noted the success of the Scotland ban last year.
