C.T., I just read your latest Blog concerning your trip to Flander's Fields, and it was an incredibly impressive and moving description of your visit. You have such an amazing skill for "descriptive writing", an ability to convey not only the images but also the feelings that you're experiencing. I'm going to be reluctant to post any trip reports at all, after reading yours!!!
I'm not as familiar with WW-I history as I should be, given that both of my Grandfathers fought in that war (one was posted to the middle eastern theatre, I believe; not sure where the other served?). Still, some of the battles in the "Great War" shaped the destiny of Canada, especially Vimy Ridge and perhaps Ypres to a lesser extent; I'll have to make an effort to learn more about it. I'm more up to date with WW-II history, and many of the destinations I want to visit in Europe are in some way connected with that interest.
The Europeans have done such a tremendous job in preserving these historical sites, and honouring those who fought and died so many years ago. I sincerely hope those in the "younger generations" never forget the sacrifices that were made on their behalf! I suppose it's incumbent on all of us to make sure that the sacrifices of our Veterans are never forgotten. On that train of thought, a few lines from the Poem "In Flanders Fields" come to mind:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
After reading your Post, I'm going to start adding WW-I sites to my list for future visits.
It sounds like you're having an incredible visit in Europe so far! Your days are probably tied up a lot with studies, but it sounds like you're making good use of your "free time". You're an inspiring writer, C.T. -- I look forward to your next installment!!!
