jennifer, it's good to hear that you've finally found a new Camera! The S3-IS was one model that did receive the coveted "Highly Recommended" rating at dpreview, so that's a good choice. The fact that your friend has that model and loves it, is another good endorsement.
You should be able to get some good deals on the S3-IS now, as it's successor the S5-IS is being released this month. IMO, it's a perfect time to buy! The fact that it uses SD Cards as well as AA batteries is great also, as those were two of the main points in your selection criteria. Some other great features are the ISO 800 capability and the wide range of accessories available (high power flash, wide angle adapters, Lens hood, etc.).
Suffice to say there's going to be a bit of a "learning curve". You'll probably want to sit down on a quiet weekend and go through the Manual very thoroughly.
Hope you enjoy your new Camera!!!

My friend paid 650 $ 8 months ago hihihi So now she's mad at me I love the thing, I feel like a paparazzi. I can't wait to get home to play around with it! Wouhou! By the way, do you know any good websites to buy lenses and accessories for it? xo

jennifer, Congratulations on the new Camera!!!
I don't know of any specific sites for purchase of accessories, however I noticed that the U.S. Canon web site appears to have an online store for ordering items of that type. If you do a Google search of "S3-IS accessories", you'll also get lots of possibilities.
Have fun!!!

Man, lucky you. I've always had my eye on the S3 but I'm quite content with my Kodak Z650 although if I could have picked another similar camera, it'd be the one you chose!

Hey Thanks for asking. Well, honestly, I haven't used it much yet as it's been more of a routine life around here. I'm going camping in the Charlevoix region this week. There ought to be some stunning photos to take there. We are also going to try to see some whales in Tadoussac Can't wait!

Hey there! I love love love love my camera! It has so many great functions I tried out on a camping/whale watching trip this weekend! I got some great shots! Seriously recommend this camera. I heard and read about the S5 a lot because it was coming out just after i wanted to buy the S3. A lot of reviews said there aren't enough differences for the difference in price, so I went with mine that was on special because of the new one coming out. xoxo

jennifer, glad to hear that you're enjoying your new Camera! You'll have to post a link to your photo site so that we can all have a look.
Speaking of photos, do we still have room in the GFE photo section? I could post a few from my trip last fall (Germany, Italy, Switzerland & France, Hostel photos) but will probably have to downsize them first as I believe the JPEG file size is about 3 MB per photo.
Cheers!!!

Jennies camera is now 284.99 on amazon...how long ago did you get your camera? Edit:nvm
I'm looking to buy a new camera, but just before I go... I will probably stop over in hong kong and get it there.
I'm looking to spend around 300-400 US dollars on a camera, is there any good recommendations? Should I get a P&S or dslr?

alphamoth, it's difficult to recommend either a P&S or SLR Camera without knowing something about the type(s) of photos you normally like to take while travelling? The budget amount you specified (US$300-400) will probably limit your choices to mostly P&S models.
While you might be able to buy an inexpensive dSLR with "kit Lens" for close to that amount in Hong Kong, keep in mind that with a dSLR you're buying into more of a system. You'll eventually need more kit in order to use the Camera to best advantage (spare Batteries, Lenses, Memory Cards, etc.). Another point to consider is that while SLR can be used in full auto mode, it requires some degree of study to obtain the best results.
You could also consider one of the "monster zoom" Cameras such as the Canon S5-IS or Panasonic models, as these would provide somewhat of a "compromise" between a P&S Camera and dSLR. They typically provide at least a 10x optical zoom with image stablization, but are a bit larger than a P&S so not as easy to carry.
Once you've narrowed down your choices to a few models, check the reviews on dpreview or steves-digicams to get some idea on the reliability of each one. I also find it helpful to read the User Forums, as the actual experiences that other people are having with a particular Camera is important information.
Cheers!
