It's perfectly fine to use regional trains in Italy because it's so cheap. We did that for Rome-Naples (and vice versa) as well as Rome-Florence with the only exception being Florence-Milan as an IC train.
Regional trains are much cheaper and not that bad. A lot of people say it's not comfortable but that's totally untrue. It's true that it does take longer (not that much longer, really) but it's worth saving euros!
Best to fly from Paris to London. Factor in costs to get to/from airport. If you're flying out of Orly in Paris, take the bus which is only 2 metro tickets! All you have to do is get to the end of Metro Line 7 then take a short bus ride to the airport. I'll have to wait till I get home to find the number of the bus.
In London, see if you can save money by take First Capital Connect or Southern trains (8-10 pounds each) into London.
