I already know this, having sustained a compound elbow fracture at the age of 9 from an unsafe bunkbed at camp. Since then, even when staying at hostels, I've never been able to handle taking the top bunk. www.wsbtv.com/health/16456669/detail.htmlI prefer hostels that don't use bunkbeds at all, and I particularly hate the bunkbeds that are stacked 3 high.

If I need to choose, I prefer to take the top bunk. I tend to hit my head a couple of dozen times, if I take the bottom one. Because I usually go to bed earlier then the party people, taking the top bunk, makes it not necessary for my 'neighbor' to climb to the top, which almost every time results in me waking up.

I suppose there's always the potential for injury with bunk beds, but I've never had a problem using the top bunk. I do think it's a good idea to have a guard rail though, as some people "move around" a lot while sleeping, so could easily fall off.
I used bunk beds for two of my Sons while they were at home, and we never had any problems (there was a guard rail though!).
Interesting article! Hopefully the Hostel operators will take note.
Cheers!
