FYI...I've decided to go with the wheeled luggag to see how I travel with it. I'm only staying in 3 hostels (7 nights in London, 4 nights in Bruges, 3 in Maastricht and 1 in Valkenburg) and one hotel before meeting up with my friend and crashing at her place so it won't be so bad for travel. I'm also only taking a suit case that is considered a "medium" in size. Not a big one, but not a carry on. My only concern is the condition of the suitcase. It's seen better days. But, then again..I won't be worried about it getting damaged now will I?

If you are always "on-the-go" I'd suggest to carry that backpack of yours. You will be sorry if you will use your suitcase. Remember, it was not designed to be "a jack of all trades" case unless you want to buy a new one after your trip...

Libby, although you've decided to use your wheeled luggage, it sounds like you're not entirely confident that the luggage will make it through the trip? IIt would be "unfortunate" if it "self destructed" during the trip. It's difficult for any of us to really know the condition of the luggage, so you'll be the best judge of that. If you're thinking of using wheeled luggage in the future (rather than your venerable Backpack), perhaps this would be the time to buy another Bag? Have a look at travelstore.ricksteves.com/catalog/index.cfm?fuseaction=product&theParentId=8&id=42 to see if it might suit your needs? Happy travels!

So how big are these lockers?

Are you asking how big a hostel locker is? It can really vary. Some hostels don't have lockers, some have lockers that are only big enough for a daypack, and some have roomy lockers that could fit a big backpack or good-sized suitcase.

Sorry, no. How big are the lockers at the train stations for the days that you only spend a couple of hours in a town?

I think those can vary too! Maybe if you post about a specific city, someone can chime in. In Passau, there are some lockers which are big enough for a 24" suitcase (probably larger than that, actually).

I don't think I ever did tell you how I did with the wheeled luggage.
I'm very happy I went with it and not the backpack. Since I had my routes all planned out it wasn't that big a deal to have it with me and it made the long walks from the hostels to the train stations much easier. It also helped at airports at at Train stations not to have to get in and out of my pack all the time. That was a pain when I did it last.
I noticed a real mix of what people had at the hostels too. Some had duffles (wheeled duffles!)and others had their backpacks and there were a number of us with wheeled bags too. I was lucky, the one I took on the trip easily fit under the bed in the hostel but the new one I purchased since then wouldn't make it. I'll have to consider that for my next trip. But still, I was pleased with how it all turned out.
