Mikul,Thanks for posting the great suggestion about Contiki. For some reason, that never occurred to me. Cheers! No problem. I wanted to travel with them originally, but didn’t find any course that was exactly what I wanted. I think that is exactly what ntonguy needs. Bonus: There are 60% female on the trip! Which tour did you book?
As with any trip, it is what you make of it. You can go with a positive look on the trip and have a fun time or find faults in everything and have a bad time.

Ntonguy, Much will depend on who you get on the tour with you. That's the real kicker. You could read a million great reviews and then have a few jerks on your tour and it not be a good time. But that's life isn't it? We never know what to expect and have to make the best of what we get. I think the same is true of anything.
I took a week long bus tour of Scotland that really rocked. The tour company I went with had some great reviews and my group was amazing. In fact, 4 years later I"m still keeping in touch with one of them. But towards the end of the tour we bumped into another group with the same company and we all agreed we woudl have killed them all within a short time. We were so different. WE wanted to get off the bus, explore, hike, have fun...and the other tour wanted to drink. We did that too, but everything in moderation.
It's a crap shoot really, but just worry about yourself and getting what YOU want out of your trip.

ntonguy, Mikul and mslibrarian make valid points - just go on the tour and have your goals in mind, then the rest will fall into place. You'll always read bad stuff about tours - notice there's always a complaints department and not a "I'm having a ball!" department?!!! The tour you've chosen is a fast one, basically out to Venice and back, but you'll cram a lot in and at least if your tour mates aren't that great you only have 10 days with them! You'll be staying at some of the campsites so they are ready-made socialising areas in the evenings and you'll still get to see some things along the way.
Enjoy your tour and then fill in any blanks with your own travel later!

I'm exploring doing a backpacking trip through Europe sometime over the summer...maybe May or maybe June-ish. My initital, beer-inducted idea is to start in Germany and maybe head west toward Amsterdam then eventually end up in London to end the thing.
I'm new at this, never backpacked, and I'm planning to go along. Any tip would be nice...
Also, I'm from Mississippi, so I could totally ham up a campy southern accent and ask things like "Where the nearest Hard Rock Cafe," or "Do you search Bud Light?"
My God, it'll be fun. I promise.

I am travlling solo too for 3 months areound Europ and have booked with Busabout, basically you buy a loop and the bus comes every 2 days and you can decide to get on or not, the majority are solo travellers to and Busabout have reccommended Hostels that you can book through there website and you get picked up and dropped of at the reccomended stops, so it's perfect for people travelling on there own who don't want to be restricted to doing an actual tour but would rather play it by ear and stay in a place longer if they like it or meet people they want to travel with. There is also a chatabout site where you talk to others who are booked and also blogs from people who have done it before and endless tips on accom etc... anyway check it out - this is the home page and if you want to go to the forums go to the Chatabout site. Already from reading the posts I feel much more comfortable about doing it on my own as I have been chatting to heaps of people doing it solo. www.busabout.com/ (main website) www.busabout.com/chatabout/ (forums to meet other travellers and ask Q's) Suz
