jennifer, fantastic, you finally bought it!
You'll probably find there's a bit of a "learning curve", but you'll be able to do so much more with a dSLR. I find that I feel "lost" when I just have the P&S Camera with me.
I believe the 50 / f1.8 Lens is an EF-Lens, so that will be a focal length of 80 mm on a "crop" Camera (1.6x). It's a good range for portraits, etc.
