safety tips for carrying the dslr

Greetings!

I just got myself a dslr and am headed to europe next month. Was torn between bringing the p&s or the dslr, due to safety concerns. But noting i'll be visiting some really pretty places i am very very tempted to bring the dslr.

So I was wondering if there are any safety tips for carrying a dslr while doing a solo-backpacking, e.g. always put the camera in a backpack instead of sling bag, etc. Hope this can mitigate the risks of bringing the camera along...

I travel with both a dSLR and a P&S these days (always good to have a backup!). I use the dSLR primarily, but the P&S is useful if I'm going out for the night and want something that will easily fit into a pocket.

I don't normally carry the dSLR in a Daypack, although that's certainly one option. I find it a lot easier just to carry it, although as inconspicuously as possible. That way it's ready when needed. With a dSLR, it's a good idea to be aware of those around you and especially careful in crowded places such as Subways, Buses, rail stations, etc.

Thanks for that. Do you take any other measures to make the dSLR more inconspicuous? I have heard of people taping the 'canon' sign on their neckslings so that it appears like a normal camera...I guess I am concerned, not knowing what to expect, so wanted to be a bit more prepared.

Hey! I think as Eagle does, you bring it, but you remain careful. Maybe put it in your bag in some places worst that others that you have to go through. Don't flaunt it out at night, keep it half under a jacket if the weather permits, etc.

For the hostel, I would just tuck it into your bag before you get inside and put it in your locker.

To add to my previous post, if I'm going to be in a "high hazard" location such as the Metro in Rome, I'll often tuck the majority of the Camera into my Vest. That keeps it out of sight to some extent and also makes it more difficult to "grab & run" during stops.

I haven't bothered disguising the "Canon" logo on the strap. Hopefully the fact that I'm a "larger" person will be of some deterrent value.
