Hi all - I'm currently looking at backpacks for my 3 week trip this spring to uk/ireland. After reading past threads, it looks like the 65L eagle creek "thrive" is a good bet. However, I've decided to bring hiking boots as well as light shoes since I plan on hiking in some mountains rain or shine. The boots will add a little weight, but mostly I'm concerned about volume - do you think I should get a larger pack or stick with the 65 L? thanks for the tips

goinsumwhere,
A 65L Pack such as the Eagle Creek Thrive is normally a good size for travel. While it would undoubtedly have room for hiking boots, adding these would reduce the space available for other items. The Thrive pack has a "shove-it pocket" so perhaps the hiking boots could be stored externally?
When purchasing a Pack, fitting for torso range is the most important criteria to keep in mind. Any competent sales associate should be able to measure your torso range.
Most of the time you'll probably only be carrying your Pack from the train to the Hostel or whatever (ie: short distances), so the weight won't be a major concern. However, there could be times when you might have to carry it for longer distances so good packing will be essential.
Hopefully the others will have some comments also.

Another way to save space is to wear the boots on board. (If you decide to take them off during the flight, be kind to your fellow passengers and have some other shoes handy ).
