Are there any travelers on this board who are either trying to get to Europe for their trips, or trying to fly back? It sounds rather grim right now.
This is a good reason not to travel down to your last dollar or Euro, if you can possibly help it, because you never know what might come up.
I understand what's happened and why, but in one way, it's so hard to believe that modern commerce and transport can be so utterly stopped by Mother Nature.

WT,
I'm not affected by the ash situation yet, but I'm scheduled to depart for Rome on May 13th so I'm starting to get a bit concerned. I've been doing a bit of preliminary checking on the Net to see if there are any alternatives.
This is one case where I'm glad that I used a Travel Agent to book the air tickets, and I'm going to give them a call on Monday to find out what my options are. I'm fortunate in one sense as I have lots of flexibility with my departure date. If they can find a flight to Rome, I could be ready to leave on fairly short notice.
Hopefully the winds will change and the situation will improve soon!

I was supposed to fly to Düsseldorf from Madrid, to see family and friends the coming week. But I am still at home in Madrid. The good thing is that it gives me some time to catch up here, as it has been a hectic few weeks.
So I have to decide, whether to hope to get a flight early next week, if and when there will be flights again; (I still need to return next sunday.); To see if a reshedule is possible for other days (but based on my on-going line of vacations, and visitors coming this way, that might be hard.) or to cancel the whole trip, and do a trip within Spain, or go to work to don't lose the holidays. For the moment it's wait and see. At least I don't have to wait at the airport, like many others.

Herrbert, I have to admit I'd be afraid of not being able to get back on Sunday, if by some chance you were able to fly out in the next day or two, given this volcano's threatened eruptions. Then again, the overland route is available to you, although it would be tediously long.

At least something seems to be happening. Not getting back is not my biggest fear as I would stay with my parents, and my computer from work would go with me, so that if I have to stay longer I can work from there, without me losing more holidays.
I have also a Plan B, and that would mean that I would go in 2 weeks time, so early May (talked to my chef, and that wouldn't be a problem). Let's see if I can still make it this week, or if I need to wait for a short while. I prefer this week, as I have made some arrangements to have dinner, to see people and to go to my best friend's birthday.

Hope this time goes smoothly. Were you able to rebook without an extra fee?

not completely as I wanted to move the times around. As my parents are flying to Madrid as well, I wanted to change my flight to that flight as well. So I pay a small extra fee for that.
I saw on my airmiles account that I had flown the flight that was cancelled. Curious if it stays that way. I am getting close to a free flight.
