waewaeexpress,The "cheapest" way to get around is usually via Coach (Bus). However, that's not always the quickest or most efficient method of travel. The "best" way is generally by train, with second class tickets. The slower regional trains are the slowest and often have one or more changes. The "fast" trains are better and often have direct routes with no changes, but of course they cost more. The fast trains (such as the TGV in France) require reservations, which are included in the cost of P-P tickets, but those travelling with Railpasses must pay for the reservations separately. If you have access to the Internet, you can research train trips by using the German rail website, www.bahn.de (click the English language tab). For longer distances, budget airlines are a good option, but of course the times associated with air travel have to be included - travel to & from airports, check-in, security, waiting for baggage on the carousel, etc. Budget airlines are not usually a good option for spontaneous travel, as the tickets increase in cost as the flight fills. Those booking long in advance get the best prices. The budget airlines usually have very restrictive baggage policies (ie: those with heavy luggage will PAY, especially with RyanAir). Finally, some of the airlines use very much out-of-the-way airports, so the time and cost to get to and from those has to be considered. Hope this helps.
