I have a question about banks and withdrawing money while in Europe. I have two local bank accounts in Michigan, and I had a huge problem when I traveled to Costa Rica over the summer and went to withdraw money. To avoid the same problem while in Europe, I was wondering what bank(s) work best both in the U.S. and in Europe as far as withdrawling without a hassle and the transaction fee.
Thanks!

nrbarens,It's difficult to offer advice on specific Banks in your area, as the financial products in this area will be different. However, it would help to know which Banks you're presently dealing with? You may find it interesting to read www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/58706/avoid-atm-fees.html as it describes several cards that might work for you. A few general comments on ATM use in Europe...... Normally travellers must have their travel funds in a chequing account with a four-number PIN. The majority of Banks in Europe don't usually offer a choice in withdrawals from savings or chequing - only one choice is offered. Although Europe is rapidly converting to "chip & PIN" technology, older magnetic stripe cards should still work fine at ATM's. I've found that it's a really good idea to have a primary ATM card as well as a backup card. If there are problems with one card, it's prudent to have another one to use. At least one credit card is also prudent. One point to note is that some automated ticket machines, gas pumps, etc. will ONLY operate with the newer "chip & PIN" credit cards. I can't recall if I mentioned it previously, but if this is your first trip to Europe it would be a really good idea to pre-read the Guidebook Europe Through The Back Door. That will answer a lot of your questions. Cheers!
