Who else watches Pilot Guides or Lonely Planet. For those who don't know, it's a travel show that takes you to many different destination. It was this show that first got me interested in travel and seeing the world. The hosts give great advice and provide insightful commentary. Anyone out there who has an opinion on this show?

I also watch both Lonely Planet and Pilot Guides. There's also Globe Trekker, which is produced by the same group I believe. I enjoy all of these shows, however I have seen most of the episodes several times. I don't know if they've made any new episodes in quite a while? The format seems to be aimed more at the younger backpacker audience, rather than slightly older travellers like myself, but still very interesting to watch. I also enjoy "Don't Forget Your Passport" (a Canadian equivalent to Lonely Planet) and especially Rick Steves Travels in Europe (on PBS)! Another show I just noticed this week is "Alternate Routes", a half hour show on Outdoor Life Network. Have a look at those if they air in your area.

What's the name of that one where that blonde haired girl travels all around the world? I like that one!

I'm not sure which blond girl you're referring to, but it may be Megan, one of the Lonely Planet/Pilot Guides travellers. They have several people that are "regulars" on the show, depending on the episode and destination. Megan, Justine & Ian are the "regulars", but they have a few others (Neil, Christine) that appear once in a while. One of the most "interesting" was the show where they described all the gross things they had to eat during their travels. I won't elaborate any further!!! Sure hope they make some new episodes, as I sure enjoy them. Cheers!!!

I love those shows!!!!!!!
A while back I think they just to be one show called "Lonely Planet." Then I don't know what happened. It's still the same people with some old repeats but then they started calling it Globe Trekker and all this other stuff. To me it's all the same though -- Lonely Planet!
The blonde girl would have to be Megan. Cute -- short blonde hair. Kind of in a bob hair cut. Tends to be bubbly and giggly.
My favourite host would definitely have to be Ian! He cracks me up!
I've been watching this show for years.....................
I don't think I have a favourite episode. I did, however, find the one in Papua New Guinea to be bloody scary!!! And I know it's not the most highly recommended tourist destination but part of me wishes they'd go to El Salvador (where I am from). Come to think of it I don't think they've ever gone to Tikal either.
As for Don't Forget Your Passport. I frankly have to admit that I find a lot of their shows boring or just plain bad. Like the one where this female host went to Spain -- it sucked bad!
They do have 2 pretty good hosts -- the Italian guy who used to host Aventura and the white Canadian guy -- you know the one, he speaks with a "typical" Canadian accent.
Anywayz, love the shows. They're the best way to do some arm chair traveling! ;D

My favourite host would have to be either Christina Chang (Greece, france, Spain) or Justine Shapiro.
My episode would have to be either New York City Guide with Ian Wright Germany wiht Justine Shapiro.

pilot guides, lonely planet and globe trekkers are all the same show. there are several different travellers. the only reason the show names are different is a regional difference, what its called in canada is different from the states, and subsequent name changes over time. In Canada it used to be called lonely planet but is now called pilot guides.

BENGY, I also enjoyed the episodes you mentioned below (although I haven't had any desire to visit NYC). I don't really have a favourite of all the "travellers", but Ian & Justine always provide an entertaining show. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if we'll ever be seeing Christina Chang on Pilot Guides / Lonely Planet again. She recently had a starring role on the TV show "LA Dragnet" (she was the District Attorney or something?), so she may have moved on to greater opportunities. However, I haven't seen that show on the air lately, so not sure if it will be back in the Fall? Ian Wright's program "Ian Wright Live" (which was filmed in Toronto, I believe) appears to have been cancelled, as I haven't seen it on the air recently?
CURIOUS TORONTO, I certainly agree that some of the "Don't Forget Your Passport" shows have been somewhat on the boring side. However, I've found some of them really interesting and well presented, especially one that was made in France. They don't seem to have "regular" travellers on that show, so it's a bit difficult to get used to the way the programs are presented. I didn't see the program from Spain, but will watch for it.
The "travellers" you were referring to are David Rocco ("the Italian guy"), Norm ("the white Canadian guy") and I think Saskia ("this female host"). All of them seem to have their own style. One episode which made me chuckle a bit was the episode from Jordan that was hosted by David Rocco. The expression on his face when he ate the sheep's eyeball was priceless!!! Ian Wright had trouble with that also.
A lot of the DFYP shows seem to focus on South or Central America, which is not really the focus of my travel right now, so I'm not too interested. I really enjoyed the program on Malta, as that's a destination I've never thought of visiting, but it certainly looked interesting (will put it on my list of "possible destinations"). I have been very impressed by the quality of the photography / cinematography though - some of it has been exceptional! I think the photography is done by Gordon Sivell, the Producer of the show. Too bad their web site isn't working, as I'd like to see if the show is going to be making any new episodes?
One final comment. There will be new episodes of LP / PG coming along, according to the LP people. Some of the original "travellers" will probably be back, but the timeline and other details seem a bit vague at this point.
Cheers!!!

If it makes up for it, future husband and I are DYING to hit New York! It pained us that we were in Toronto for a few days and didn't have time to take a NY side trip!

DANIELLE, Sorry, I didn't mean to "break your heart". I should have been more specific and said "I have no desire to visit NYC at the present time". That certainly wouldn't preclude any visits in the future. My TOTAL focus right now is to see more of Europe, which is kind of an "all consuming passion". Perhaps when I have done some more travelling in Europe, I'll have time to get to NYC. I haven't given much thought to visiting Toronto either, but that's another destination I'll probably consider at some point.
I have given some thought to driving across Canada within the next few years, and then heading down to the New England States and New York (in the fall of course, for the fall colours). I'm within a few years of being able to retire, so hopefully I'll have lots of time (and hopefully enough money) to do some travelling. I haven't seen much of Canada east of Alberta, so that's probably something I should think about.
I haven't really done a lot of research into what I could see and do in NYC, besides the obvious (Empire State Building, Central Park, visit the Letterman show, etc.). I was watching a program on TV this afternoon which was profiling The Plaza Hotel and some of the stores on 5th Avenue, and it appeared that it would be a very expensive destination indeed! The cost of exchange would be roughly the same as the Euro, so that wouldn't be a factor.
Although I realize this is kind of a difficult question for you to answer (as you don't know what my sightseeing preferences are), I'd be interested in any suggestions you have on activities or sights in that area. Are there any decent Hostels or reasonably priced Hotels in the "main" downtown area? Also, is it generally safe for tourists there right now (I suppose it can't be any worse than Vancouver is at the present time)?
The airlines sometimes have "seat sales" so it probably wouldn't cost a lot to travel to NYC by air. Who knows, perhaps WestJet will add that to their list of destinations in the near future? That would make an appealing destination to visit for a week or so.
You've given me another destination to think about, so will put a note in my travel folder on visiting NYC.
Cheers!!!

WestJet has already added it and fares are very reasonable.
I just looked at fares for the end of Sept. and they are $149 each way from Vancouver.

I haven't been to NYC, but it has an abundance of free and low-cost attractions, including a number of great, world-renowned museums. Plus there is a lot of artistic and cultural life there. I'd definitely be really careful when choosing a hostel - some I have read about sound pretty yucky and/or poorly located.

No matter what, NYC is great! I loved my trip there and I really suggest going there at least once in your life!
