Hi! I'm having trouble differenciating breakfasts.... I was just wondering what exactly was a continental breakfast compared to an american, an english...etc! Thanks! Jen xoxo

Hey Jen, Each country seems to have it's own 'breakfast' menu, some much grander than others. But at a minimum, no matter where you are, you should have coffee/tea, brochen/bagel/bread, yogurt, cold cereal, fruit and in many a selection of cold meats (cold cuts). Normal other selections will be hard boiled eggs, hot cereal (porridge), and if a 'full English/Scottish/Irish' breakfast several meats as well. Going full out, eggs as you like them or omelettes may be on the menu.

I don't know about the rest of Europe, but the usual hostel breakfast in Italy is capuccino or hot chocolate (usually pretty good) with a small dry piece of bread (usually pretty bad), and some jam and butter.

this is also what i've had in hostels. sometimes, without the butter/jam! a hotel will often give *big* breakfasts - even on the continent! but hostels? well, in scandinavia they did. - d I don't know about the rest of Europe, but the usual hostel breakfast in Italy is capuccino or hot chocolate (usually pretty good) with a small dry piece of bread (usually pretty bad), and some jam and butter.

Oops...yep, should have noted that I am referring here to 'budget' one star hotels. I don't stay in hostels, so of course have no way of knowing what they offer. Would sound like less? Even in Italy I always had yogurt and cold cereal offered along with bread...and yes butter and jam.

Yeah, usually in hostels it's bread and jam, coffee and tea and occasionally cereal. It's pretty basic.
Occasionally, you will get some sort of extra like a boiled egg or something like that. Nothing (usually) to write home about!
Sometimes in Ireland you will get a "cooked breakfast" which will be eggs, meat etc. Yum!

If you are in Scandinavia, and they offer a buffet breakfast option, consider taking it even if it sounds pricey (if you're lucky, it will be included). Everywhere we stayed we had a buffet with the following, and probably more:
meats cheeses breads and rolls jams cereals yogurt (several types) boiled eggs pastries (sometimes) milk juices coffee tea
After a breakfast like that at about 9 AM, we generally were not interested in lunch. We ate two meals a day plus fruit and were fine. (I did not intentionally set out to skip meals to save money - it's just that this was all we could manage to eat!)
