Hello! I am planning my next trip! I am absolutely sure I will see Italy and Greece. I read about leaving Greece for the end and flying out from there, sounds good to me. Does anyone know if tickets from Greece to Canada are expensive? Would it be better to fly back to London or Amsterdam and then take the plane home?
Now, I hear it is a real hassle to get from Italy to Greece! can anyone help me out on this issue? I'd like to see the greek islands, are they worth the hassle, I really don't know much about this country so if you have ideas of places I should see, could you please help me? Thanks Jen

The Greek Islands are well worth it. Sun, sea, antiquities, friendly people. I think it is a little bit easier to get over to Greece from northern Italy rather than southern. We did sort of an Italy-Greece loop. We took the overnight ferry from Venice to Corfu. We had a cabin (we are 40 somethings) but plenty of young people just stretched out on the deck. From Corfu, we flew to Crete, then worked our way by ferry through the Cyclades back to Athens. From Athens we flew to Rome. The only thing we booked far ahead was the Venice-Corfu ferry. Everything else we kind of did as we went along, including the flight from Athens to Rome, which cost about a hundred USD per person.

You are going to love Italy and Greece, especially if you go when it starts to warm up - May onwards. May 1st is the magic opening date for the Greek Islands, before that there's not much going on and a lot of facilities are closed. Cil's advice is a good route to take, Venice to Corfu, as the trip is about 24-ish (Greek time!) hours and if the weather is good you can sit on the deck and watch the coastline drift by. From Corfu you can catch a ferry to Igoumenitsa then travel overland (busses, but I'd make enquiries as they aren't fabulously reliable at some times of year) through Amfilochia, Corinth and to Athens. Or from Corfu there are overnight ferries to Athens. Flying is also a great way to save time, it just depends on how much you want to mix up your forms of travel. Depending on where you want to start and end the Italian part of your trip (think I wrote to you about Italy in an earlier reply), you could also catch a ferry from Brindisi to Corfu or Bari to Patras and other destinations in Greece. I guess which ferry to catch is dependant on where you start and end in Italy. Either way, I'd book that leg of your journey as lots of Europeans (Germans, Scandis, Dutch) make the trek down from the north en masse and if you time it wrong you could be left on the dock! As for ticket prices from Greece to Canada, just keep checking for special deals, they tend to come up around March for travel in (northern) Summer. It won't make much difference where you fly out from, but I've been told it is often cheaper to fly from Greece, Italy, Amsterdam or Paris rather than return to London first. Hope it all helps in your planning!
