Hey all! So i'm going to hit europe for about 5 weeks in september (starting aug 29th actually) basic itinerary is belgium, france, spain, france again, italy, austria, switzerland, and then uk (which that i'm good for been a bunch of times and have family to stay with). so i have a few questions... 1. will a sheet be warm enough for hostels in all these locations or will i freeze without a sleeping bag? 2. should i pack as if i was going in the summer (which is what most of these posts seem to be about)? shorts and t-shirts or more pants? 3. have you heard of the hotel chain formule 1? it seems cheap and clean (in some countries cheaper than a hostel)? are they any good or pretty gross? 4. i have a top-loading pack... how can i lock it? any tips would be helpful! thanks! Julie

Julie, I'll try to answer some of your questions (hopefully you'll get some other replies as well).
1.) It's difficult to say whether a sheet will be warm enough, as I suppose this will depend on the weather. September should be reasonably warm, but there's no way to predict this? With regard to sleeping bags, keep in mind that many Hostels won't allow these due to the possibility of "cross contamination" from bugs or whatever. 2.) With regard to packing, it would probably be prudent to pack a combination of clothing so that you can "layer" if necessary. That way you will have the flexibility to dress according to the weather. 3.) I haven't heard of Formule 1, so can't comment. 4.) Top loading packs are inherently difficult to lock, as many just have a drawstring at the top, and some have other access points to get at things on the bottom of the pack. To avoid a very long reply, you might want to check other posts in this section, as I believe someone else asked about this topic previously. You might also check the "Activities & Gear" section at thorntree.lonelyplanet.com as the same question has been asked there.
Good luck with this and happy travels!!!

I was in europe last september. in france and italy it was really warm, I never wore pants (brought 2 pairs of zip offs. perfect for that time of year). in the UK and austria I wore full pants, a long sleeve shirt and a jacket. the weather will vary from north to south so I'd pack for it. I don't think a sheet will be enough. I've heard of forumla 1 hotels. they're cheap but they're usually on the outskirts of the cities they're in. Hey all! I disagree, I think a sheet will be enough, because most Hostels wont let you have a sleeping bag anyway. They usually provide blankets, you just bring your own sheet. I travelled from Sept to Dec and only had a sleep sheet, never once did I have to rent a blanket. They always provided, and they usually seemed fairly clean, although I was glad for my sleep sheet.
